FUN Challenge #5-Use something Sparkly or Shiny

We made this fun card at Stamp Class using Shimmer Paint.  Everyone enjoyed painting the Vegas Gold Shimmer Paint and the Bright Copper Shimmer Paint on their embossed cardstock.  Just remember to shake your Shimmer Paint well before using it.
Shimmer Paint and Leaves CardSUPPLIES:
Inks: Bright Copper Shimmer Paint #147045
Vegas Gold Shimmer Paint #146886
Cardstock:  Crushed Curry
Mossy Meadow
Mango Melody
Pumpkin Pie
Cajun Craze
Big Shot:  Swirls & Curls Embossing Folder #147923
Detailed Leaves Thinlits #147921
Precision Base Plate #139684
Other:  1/4″ Copper Trim #144179
One Q-Tip for each color of Shimmer Paint
Adhesives:  Multipurpose Adhesive Sheets #144106
Tombow Glue

INSTRUCTIONS:
1.  Cut your Crushed Curry card base at 5-1/2″ x 8-1/2″.  Score and fold at 4-1/4″.
2.  Cut your Mossy Meadow card front at 4″ x 5-1/4″.  Run through your Big Shot with the Swirls & Curls embossing folder.
~Paint your Swirls & Curls card front with the Shimmer Paint using a Q-Tip for each color.  You can paint as much or as little as you want.  The ladies at stamp class painted more than I did and it looked great!  Set aside.
3.  Cut your Cardstock and a matching piece of Multipurpose Adhesive Sheet for each color.
~Cajun Craze Large Leaf: 3-1/4″ x 3-1/2″
~Pumpkin Pie 3 Leaves: 3″ x 3″
~Mango Melody Long Leaf: 1-1/2″ x 4″
~Crushed Curry strip: 1″ x 4-1/4″
4.  Run over each Multipurpose Adhesive Sheet piece with your Bone Folder.  This helps it to separate from the backing better. Attach your Multipurpose Adhesive Sheets to their matching sized cardstock by peeling off the word paper and sticking it to the cardstock.  It doesn’t have to be perfect.
5.  Cut out your Leaves and Strip using your Big Shot and the Precision Base Plate.  You may still need to roll your dies through several times on each side.  Check to see that the cardstock has cut completely through.  The Adhesive Sheet backing may not cut all the way through even though the cardstock has cut all the way through.  This is okay.
6.  Lay out all your pieces on your Mossy Meadow card front.  Remove the adhesive backing from each leaf and the strip and attach them to the card.  Attach a piece of Copper Trim to your card on one corner if desired.  Use SNAIL on the back to attach it.
Your Card is finished.
7.  Optional:  Emboss your Envelope Flap with the Swirls & Curls embossing folder.  Watch this Video to see how easy it is.

Children’s Summer Crafting Ideas Part 1

Summer Fun!My 4-year-old granddaughter’s birthday was a couple of weeks ago.  I sent her some Stampin’ Up! Note cards with envelopes, the Itty Bitty Accents Punch Pack, Strawberry Slush Thick Baker’s Twine, and a partially used Love Notes Paper Stack for her birthday.  She has been having so much fun!  She made this card for me.  Her Mom probably tied the Baker’s Twine for her.  This made me think of what I did with my children during the Summer Months.
Handmade Card by 4 Year Old GranddaughterWith Summer in full swing (or coming shortly if you get out of school in June), you need something to help the children be happy and busy.  When my children were young we had a schedule that included an art related activity every day.  Some did enjoy it less than others, I am sad to admit.

Here are some Art and Craft related suggestions.  The ages are general.  Your child may learn slower or faster.  I am just guessing when I introduced these skills to my children.  Also teach them how to clean up when they are done.  Make it be a part of the creative process.  (I still need help with the cleaning up part.)  Feel free to advance them to more difficult skills as they are ready.

Ages 1-3.  Learning Basic Skills
~Coloring.  Children as young as 1 year old can start coloring with crayons and colored pencils with supervision and help.  Let them color on scrap papers (printing on one side).  Get them a simple coloring book when they are a little older.  I let my kids color and cut when strapped in their high chairs for the longest time……..  My youngest daughter still remembers……
~Cutting.  Get safety scissors with rounded tips.  (Get left-handed scissors if your child is a lefty.  It will keep them from getting frustrated and giving up.)  Let the child cut scrap paper over a trash can or other container.  (This will let you enjoy having them cut AND you will have less cleanup!)  Both coloring and cutting help develop their fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination.  They really need to learn these basic skills as a foundation for other motor and learning skills.

Ages 3-5.
~The child will hopefully be able to color more intricate pictures, if they have the desire.  Some are not really interested until they are in school.  You can now include Markers with supervised use.  Coloring on a white board is also fun.  Same with chalk boards.
~Teach them to cut around pictures they have colored or you have drawn.  Their cutting ability will get better with practice.  Again, remind them to cut over something and clean up after themselves.
~Teach them to use the Big Shot with embossing folders.  They think it is magic!  You might want to have some paper precut to fit into embossing folders.  They can also emboss the larger punched shapes.
~Teach them to use Punches-both the hand-held and the larger punches.  Also teach them to keep the punched shapes in a baggie.  (Again, so no clean up is required.)
~They can also use the Big Shot (supervised) with Bigz Dies, Thinlits, and Framelits.  Let them enjoy thinking up and making their own creations!  This is an important part of brain and motor skills development.
~Kids this age also like to help cook.  They really enjoy stirring and pouring in ingredients.  I also had them count the cups of flour and other ingredients.  Oh, Yes,  They do enjoy licking and tasting the ingredients and the finished product!  My kids who didn’t really enjoy the “craft” projects, really enjoyed the cooking and baking projects.  They are all pretty good cooks as adults.

Come back on Friday to get Summer Ideas for the Elementary age kids and Teenagers.

Happy Summer Crafting!

Watercolored Kind Koala Card

Try this quick and easy Watercolor Technique using Markers and your Aqua Painter to make this cute Koala Bear Card.
Watercolored Kind Koala Bear

SUPPLIES:
Stamps:  Kind Koala Wood #134360
Inks:  Black StazOn
Markers:  Chocolate Chip
Baked Brown Sugar (retiring June 2, 2015) OR Soft Suede
Crumb Cake
Crisp Cantaloupe (retiring June 2, 2015)
Daffodil Delight OR Crushed Curry
Basic Gray
Card Stock:  Whisper White OR Watercolor Paper
Soft Suede
Crisp Cantaloupe
Big Shot:  Honeycomb Embossing Folder #129378
Punch:  Corner Rounder #135346
Other:  Aqua Painter #103954
Paper Towel
Tombow Glue
Dimensionals
Stampin’ Paper Trimmer

INSTRUCTIONS:
1.  Cut your Whisper White card stock or Watercolor Paper at 2-1/8″ x 3-3/4″.  I used Whisper White card stock which warped due to the water.  You can also use Watercolor Paper to keep your paper more flat.
2.  Stamp your Koala Bear with the Black StayzOn ink.
3.  Color your Koala Bear.  I used the Chocolate Chip Marker on the left side and colored about 1/8″ along the left side lines-paws, tummy, face, and around the outside edges of his ears.  Next use your Baked Brown Sugar or Soft Suede Marker to color about 1/8″ next to the Chocolate Chip on his body and face.  Use your Crumb Cake Marker to color in the rest of his body, face, and ears.  Use your Crisp Cantaloupe Marker to color the center of his ears.  The Basic Gray Marker is for his nose.  You might as well color the flower with a yellow Marker.  I just colored the petal tips.   (I just noticed I forgot to color the center of the flower.  You might want to do that now.  I think I will just add some Dazzling Details to it.)
3.  Place your card stock or water color paper on top of several layers of paper as the water will soak through and the color will bleed through and can stain your surface.  Fill your Aqua Painter with water.  Press against the paper towel while gently squeezing to start your water flowing through the tip.  “Color” each part of the Koala and flower to get the look you want.  You can either start at the darker colors like I did, OR start with the lighter colors.  Use circular motions to blend the colors and get the gradual shading effect.  Don’t worry if you go outside the lines a little – watercoloring does that.  I did not use the Aqua Painter on the inside of his ears.  Set aside to dry.
4.  Cut your Crisp Cantaloupe card base at 5-1/2″ x 8-1/2″.  Score and fold at 4-1/4″.
5.  Cut your Crisp Cantaloupe card front at 4-1/4″ x 5-1/2″.  Run through your Big Shot with your embossing folder.  Glue to your card base.
6.  Cut your Soft Suede card layer at 2-1/2″ x 4-1/8″.  Use the Corner Rounder Punch to round all the corners.  Put Dimensionals on the back.
6.  When your Koala is dry, use the Corner Rounder Punch to round all the corners.  Put Dimensionals on the back edge and center.  Attach to the Soft Suede layer, then to your card base.
7.  You can also emboss the flap of your envelope using the same embossing folder you used on your card front.  Watch this video for instructions.

Happy Watercoloring!

INSTRUCTIONS:
1.  Cut your Lost Lagoon card base at 5-1/2″ x 8-1/2″.  Score and fold at 4-1/4″.  Watch this video if you need more instructions on making a basic card base.
2.  Cut your Lost Lagoon card front at 4-1/4″ x 5-1/2″.  Run through your Big Shot with an embossing folder.  Gently rub your Silver ink pad over the raised embossed parts.  I found that a swirling, circular motion worked best for this pattern.  Now cover with Clear Embossing Powder.  Remove excess.  Melt with your Heat Tool.  Hopefully you get the interesting coloring effect that I did.  Attach to your card base with Tombow Glue.
3.  Choose the Silver Fancy Foil Vellum pattern you want.  I used the Hearts.  Cut it out using the Heart Framelit of your choice.  I believe I used the 2nd largest.  Just make sure it will fit on your card in the direction you want.  Make sure the Hearts on the Vellum are facing toward the top of your Heart!  Apply Glue Dots behind each Silver Heart and attach to your card front.
4.  Stamp the desired sentiments on the Silver Foil card stock with the Black StazOn ink.  Let dry for a minute or two, then punch out with your Word Window or other punch.  Attach in the desired positions on your Vellum Heart with Dimensionals.
5.  You can emboss the envelope flap with the same embossing folder you used for your card front.  Watch this video for directions.
6.  You now have a wonderful Anniversary card to help someone celebrate.

Fun Frames Hi!

The new Fun Frames embossing folders make a great focal point for any card.  I used the Decorative Label shaped one on this card.  It is much larger than I thought.  I even used a couple of different techniques on this card.  Enjoy making one for yourself or a friend.
Fun Framelit Hi!

SUPPLIES:
Ink:  Melon Mambo
Tempting Turquoise
Card Stock:  Whisper White
Tempting Turquoise
Big Shot:  Fun Frames Embossing Folder  #133727
Decorative Dots Embossing Folder  #133520
Little Letters Thinlits  #133730
Punch:  Itty Bitty Accents Punch Pack #133787
Other:  Strawberry Slush Thick Baker’s Twine  #135637
Stamping Sponge  #101610
Sponge Dauber
Paper Snips or Scissors
Glue Dots
Tombow Glue
Stampin’ Dimensionals

INSTRUCTIONS:
1.  Cut your Tempting Turquoise card base at 5-1/2″ x 8-1/2″.  Score and fold at 4-1/4″.  Watch this video for detailed card base instructions.
2.  Cut your Tempting Turquoise card front at 4″ x 5-1/4″.  Run through your Big Shot using the Decorative Dots embossing folder.  Use a Sponge Dauber (or Stamping Sponge) inked with Tempting Turquoise to lightly color the raised dots.  You can darken the edge with either the Sponge Dauber or just run the edge against your ink pad.  Watch this video for more instructions.
3.  Ink your Sponge with Melon Mambo ink and sponge the inside of your Fun Frames embossing folder (the part with the Sizzix and Stampin’ Up! logos).  Carefully place your Whisper White card stock inside the Embossing Folder, being careful to not move the card stock.  Now Run through your Big Shot.  Take out your Frame and see how nicely all the details show up.  Cut the frame out leaving about 1/8″ to 1/4″ border around the Frame.  Attach to your card front with Dimensionals.  Clean your embossing folder by running under water or use Stampin’ Mist and a tissue or paper towel.
4.  Cut your Little Letters “H” and “I” out of Whisper White card stock.  Lightly sponge with Tempting Turquoise ink before removing them from the dies.  Just use a stylus or toothpick to help remove them by pushing through the little circles.  Attach the letters inside your Frame with Tombow Glue.  I punched out the star from my first version of sponged Tempting Turquoise card stock that was embossed with the Decorative Dots embossing folder.  Attach with a Glue Dot or Tombow Glue.
5.  Tie two bows with the Strawberry Slush Thick Baker’s Twine.  Trim ends the desired length either now or after they are attached to the card.  Place a Glue Dot behind the knot and adhere it into the desired position.  Repeat with the other bow.  To adhere the ends of the bow, use your Paper Piercing Tool to scrunch up a Glue Dot so it forms a thin line.  Now attach the end of the Baker’s Twine to the Glue Dot and position as desired.  Repeat with the rest of the ends.
6.  Admire your Fun Frame card before giving it away.  If you would like you can emboss the envelope flap.  Watch this video for instructions.
